Mavi Sanchez-Vives, M.D., PhD in Neurosciences was a postdoctoral researcher in neurobiology at Rockefeller University and Yale University. She established her own laboratory at the Neurosciences Institute in Alicante (Spain) to study cerebral cortex dynamics. There, she started using virtual reality in 2002 from the neuroscientific perspective, an area that she pioneered. On this topic, she co-authored with Mel Slater the highly cited article: “From Presence to Consciousness through Virtual Reality” (Nature Neuroscience, 2006).
She has been ICREA Research Professor at the IDIBAPS (Institute of Biomedical Research) in Barcelona since 2008, where she leads the Systems Neuroscience group and is co-director of the Event Lab (Experimental Virtual Environments in Neuroscience and Technology). Her main interests are emergent cerebral cortex properties and body representation using electrophysiology and virtual reality. She is Specialty Chief Editor of Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience and Associate Editor for Frontiers in Virtual Environments in Frontiers in Robotics and AI. She has been one of the founders of Virtual Bodyworks Inc.
